A Morning With Surrey Young Carers

News

On Wednesday 31st July the LMF team were invited along to one of Surrey Young Carers organised Activity Days.

From the minute Fanni and Cheryl arrived they were greeted by one of the lovely support workers and could see how well organised and thought out the event was.

Then Russell, a previous attendee of such a day and now a trainee Youth Worker kindly took them around to see all the activities that were available to the 60 participants.

There really was something for everyone;

Body Art and Face Painting
The chance to have your caricature done
A game zone offering various computer games
Archery
Football
Numerous giant garden games
Arts and crafts
Dance workshops

It was fantastic to see how much the young people aged between 12 and 16 got out of such an experience and you could literally see friendships forming before your very eyes.

The team also got to chat to a lot of the staff there and they heard about some of the benefits;

–          The young people get to meet others with similar backgrounds and problems

–          Some children just keep themselves to themselves on a daily basis and at school and other children wouldn’t ever know why, on activity days they don’t feel isolated and it can be a real confidence boost

–          Unlike some children who get to attend a variety of activities during the summer holidays for most there on that day, it will be their only day out

–          Many children are siblings of a child with complex needs so at home they have to fit in and approach games etc. in an inclusive way. There they get to enjoy lots of attention and get to be competitive!

The visit proved why SYC is such a worthy cause and one LMF are very proud to support.
